Neighbourhood guide

Woodstock

The old industrial belt east of the city. Warehouse conversions, galleries, the Saturday market at the Old Biscuit Mill, and blocks that change character within one street.

Who Woodstock suits

Repeat visitors, design and food travellers, people who want a car and a lock-up.

Is it safe at night?

2/5, relative to Cape Town

Uneven. Lower Woodstock near the market and Albert Road is active and generally fine by day. Upper Woodstock and the streets towards Salt River are not somewhere to wander after dark.

What does it cost?

R · Budget

Cheapest of the inner suburbs by a clear margin.

Airport and beach

Airport 15 to 30 min. Beach: 20 min to Muizenberg.

The safest route from the airport

Local tip

Pick accommodation with off-street parking and confirm which side of Victoria Road it is on. Walk to the market in the morning, drive back at night. That single rule is what locals do.

Safety scores are our judgement of walking around at night, not an official rating. For police-station crime figures see the SAPS crime statistics.
