Neighbourhood guide

Southern Suburbs (Newlands, Claremont, Constantia)

Leafy, green and residential on the mountain's eastern flank. Oak streets, wine farms, good schools and almost no tourist infrastructure.

Who Southern Suburbs suits

Families, wine trips, longer stays, visitors with a car.

Is it safe at night?

4/5, relative to Cape Town

Quiet and low-incident, with high walls and neighbourhood watches. Distances mean you drive everywhere, so nothing much happens on foot.

What does it cost?

RRR · Upper mid

Upper mid, with a wide spread between Claremont flats and Constantia estates.

Airport and beach

Airport 20 to 35 min. Beach: 20 min to Muizenberg, 30 to Clifton.

The safest route from the airport

Local tip

It rains measurably more here than on the Atlantic side. Newlands is one of the wettest suburbs in the country, which is why it is so green. Pack for it in winter.

Safety scores are our judgement of walking around at night, not an official rating. For police-station crime figures see the SAPS crime statistics.

Knowing which suburb to book is half of it. The other half is the route between the airport, your accommodation and dinner. Clearpath Routes is a Cape Town navigation app that routes you around known risk areas, based on historical and reported incident data. Live alerts are part of Premium.
