Neighbourhood guide

City Bowl & CBD

The flat grid between Table Mountain and the harbour. Offices by day, restaurants and bars by night, and the densest concentration of things you can reach on foot.

Who City Bowl & CBD suits

First-timers without a car, business visitors, anyone who wants to walk to dinner.

Is it safe at night?

3/5, relative to Cape Town

Fine on busy streets in daylight. Long Street and the quieter blocks around Buitengracht thin out fast after 22:00. Phone snatching is the common crime, not violence.

What does it cost?

RR · Mid

Mid-range. Aparthotels drop sharply outside December and January.

Airport and beach

Airport 20 to 40 min. Beach: 15 min to Clifton by car.

The safest route from the airport

Local tip

Stay east of Buitengracht and north of Wale for the shortest walks. The Company's Garden end is calmer; the Foreshore end empties out at night and is not a nice walk home.

Safety scores are our judgement of walking around at night, not an official rating. For police-station crime figures see the SAPS crime statistics.
